A wonderful transcription for two guitars by Jan Hron. The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians describes him as the most progressive French composer of his generation and emphasizes that his melodic and harmonic innovations have influenced subsequent generations. He shuns virtuosity in favor of classic clarity similar to the French harpsichord masters. The precisely articulated melodic lines of his songs are in the best tradition of French vocal music. His great requiem and the Élégie for cello and piano have entered the standard repertoire. The “Cantique de Jean Racine” op.11 was written in 1864-65 for mixed choir and piano (organ) and is dedicated to César Franck. Available on CD from the Duo Lauterbachova / Hron], performance score, text in English and German.
