Béla Bartók (1881-1945) is considered one of the most outstanding and influential composers of the 20th century. Grown up as the son of a musical family in Hungary, he developed into a leading international concert pianist and music teacher, who first learned at the Music Academy in Budapest and later taught himself. As a pioneer in the field of ethnomusicology Bartók collected thousands of folk songs during his travels through Central Europe. Their influences can be traced throughout his compositional career, including such groundbreaking concert pieces as Violin Concerto No. 2 (1937-38) and the Concerto for Orchestra (1943). The Boosey & Hawkes Bartók Edition features stylish arrangements of the most popular pieces by one of the 20th century's leading composers. Available for various instruments (some with piano accompaniment), this edition is an exciting collection with a repertoire to learn and enjoy. All the pieces in the collection have been carefully reworked in this issue for guitar solo and partly for guitar duo to capture as faithfully as possible the style and structure of the original works. Thus, this wonderful repertoire of a new generation of advanced instrumentalists can be brought closer for the first time. Bartók for Guitar offers a selection of highlights from Bartók's educational repertoire, including For Children, Microcosmos and other pieces edited for guitar (solo and in duet) by Michael McCartney. The included audio CD contains exemplary recordings of the pieces to stimulate their own interpretation. - Content: Answering Voices, Imitation and Inversion, Pastorale, Reflection, Imitaton and Inversion, In Dorian Mode, In Phrygian Mode, Chorale, Children's Song, Canon at the Lower Fifth, Slovakian Song, Imitation Reflected, Dance in Canon Form, Slow Dance, Mourning Song, Minuetto, Hungarian Song, Contrary Motion, Midsummer Night Song, Rogue's Song/Sorrow, Old Hungarian Tune, Song, Tound Dance, Come Home, Lidi, Cradle Song, Triplets, Wedding Song, Baking Song, St George's Day, Where are your Geese, On the Street in Istvánd, Kitty, Kitty, Ploughing, Play Song, The Highway Robber, If there were Cherries, Study, Duets: Dance from Bucsum, Sash Dance, In One Spot, Slovakian Boys' Dance, Old Dance Tunes, The Bagpipe, Minuet
