Béla Bartók (1881-1945) is considered one of the most outstanding and influential composers of the 20th century. Grown up as the son of a musical family in Hungary, he developed into a leading international concert pianist and music teacher, who first learned at the Music Academy in Budapest and later taught himself. As a pioneer in the field of ethnomusicology Bartók collected thousands of folk songs during his travels through Central Europe. Their influences can be traced throughout his compositional career, including such groundbreaking concert pieces as Violin Concerto No. 2 (1937-38) and the Concerto for Orchestra (1943).
