The "Romanian Folk Dances" were originally written for piano, but have also appeared in other versions. The present arrangement by Gerhard Braun and Arthur Levering for flute and guitar is based on the piano score as well as on the instrumentation by the composer himself as well as on Zoltán Székely's arrangement for violin and piano. These six short movements contain the folk melodies in Bartók's own harmonization and span a broad mood scale, which ranges from the delicate pe loc with tight melody and excessive seconds to the passionate maruntel with lydian touch and urgent, syncopated accompaniment.
